All Orthoptists practicing in Canada must have certification from the COC.

Entry to a Canadian Orthoptic education program requires an undergraduate degree from an accredited Canadian university or an international equivalent. Programs are 24 months of intensive academic studies and concurrent clinical experience guided by a national curriculum and  competency profile. Canadian Orthoptic programs are accredited by Accreditation Canada under their EQual program for Health Education .


Education Program

Clinical Vision Science Program, Dalhousie University

           

The Clinical Vision Science Program is the sole Orthoptic training program in Canada, respected internationally for its caliber of orthoptic education. It is a graduate program developed through a unique partnership between the IWK Health Centre and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, offering students the option of earning an entry to practice a Graduate diploma or a Masters of Science degree. The content of this program is structured to meet the professional requirements of both the Canadian and American Orthoptic Councils (COC, AOC), and prepares graduates to take their Canadian certification exams.
